Dear LOADSTAR 128,
As a former LOADSTAR 64 and current LOADSTAR 128 subscriber, I have a
comment or two regarding your two-year LOADSTAR 128 subscription offer.
The price is fair, a value when compared to your regular subscription prices
and I will take advantage of the offer before the expiration date. However,
have you considered what you are asking of your subscribers? In the age of
increasingly-common Commodore rip-offs, you are asking subscribers to trust
that LOADSTAR 128 will still be in existence two years from now. And to
back that trust with cash paid in advance. In today's market that is a tall
order.
In the last 1 1/2 years I have had my trust in reputable (supposedly)
companies abused severely. A few examples: a just renewed subscription to
Run magazine converted to PC World, which I had no earthly use for and
cancelled; a #30.00 order to Remsoft for software which was never delivered,
but my check was cashed; a subscription to Compute! Gazette converted to a
standard IBM compatible subscription, also cancelled (and, refreshingly,
received a refund) and now an order to The Grapevine Group placed in
December '93 and for which I have received nothing but promises to date.
Perhaps you can understand my concern, anger and skepticism? As mentioned
above, I will renew my subscription, but I do have a question - is my trust
misplaced yet one more time?
I do love LOADSTAR 128. I dropped my subscription to LOADSTAR 64 because of
what appeared to be a focus on games and puzzles. LOADSTAR 128 has programs
I can and do use daily. I sincerely look forward to receiving LOADSTAR 128
for the next two-years and hopefully well beyond that time.
Sincerely,
Harold Sorensen
Humble TX
LS 128: Well said, Harold. I'm sure every subscriber has echoed those
sentiments at one time or another. These days it's only reasonable to be
wary when ordering Commodore products.
Softdisk is working on a idea that enables us to charge your credit card by
the month for the price of that issue. That will solve the problem, won't
it? I'll keep you apprised of progress.
The traditional way for a magazine to stop publishing is to offer
subscribers a similar product for the rest of their subscription -- or a
refund. In last issue's Diskovery I tried to imagine ending LOADSTAR 128
logically, with foreknowledge of the end. A planned farewell. I was
worried about the lack of program submissions. But this issue I feel
invigorated by the seven or eight good programs I received recently. I've
also arranged with some prolific C-64 programmers to do occasional 80-column
128 programs. Now all I'm worried about is that the number of subscribers
has dropped below 1000.
So you're worried that LOADSTAR 128 will, out of the blue, stop publishing
and not offer a refund. I'm worried that you will not renew your
subscription when the time comes, and that our mass mailings (which are
quite expensive and probably annoying) won't generate enough subscriptions
to keep our numbers up. Worry. Worry. Worry.
I don't think that Softdisk can guarantee that you WILL get eight more
issues of LOADSTAR 128 but Softdisk can guarantee that you WILL get a refund
or another subscription in its place. That IS our guarantee.
On a personal note, it may give you some security to know that I am one of
the world's ruttiest people. Er, I mean that when I get in a rut, I stay in
the damn thing for years, if not decades. I had one job, playing in a band,
for 25 years before coming to work as Grand Exalted Mojo of LOADSTAR. I get
unpleasant chills thinking about doing anything other than slapdashing out
LOADSTARs month after month. Can a 47-year-old bald guy get a job anywhere
these days with only a knowledge of C-64 BASIC programming (and an
incredible knack for spelling) going for him? Harold, I'm with LOADSTAR for
the duration. I plan to retire after the Tower crumbles, and I can't touch
my annuity until I'm 59. Help me out, everybody. Renew your subscriptions
so that when I reach that magic age, I'm still answering letters in Forum
about the future of LOADSTAR 128. It could happen!
